For the 2015 annual Standard Bank Hackathon we were approached to come up with a new concept for this year, as well as to execute the whole event from start to finish. Given the IT audience and style of the event being fun and casual, we came up with the concept of nostalgic 8-bit gamification where we used classics such as Pacman, Super Mario Bros, Tetris and Street Fighter, to name a few, in our designs, graphics for screen, décor and furniture (including painting these characters onto work stations). In addition, we had a chill zone where you could sleep on hammocks, chill on bean bags, or get a massage, or refresh the mind in our activity zone with a F1 motion simulator, oxygen bar, pinball, foosball, play stations, an old-style arcade game and even the digital graffiti wall. Since the event stretched 36-hours, right through the night, you could get something to eat at any time from a number of food trucks with various cuisines to choose from.
